Our Mission "Celebrating the artist in each of us through fine art instruction and gallery exhibitions, ArtWorks immerses people with developmental disabilities into the larger arts community: providing them with diverse opportunities to lead fulfilling lives.
ArtWorks Gallery & Studio is located at 236 Penn Avenue in downtown Scranton, in the heart of the city's renovation and restoration area. Our organization is proudly supported by Beacon Specialized Living. ArtWorks includes a modern exhibition space, and 7 unique classroom facilities. We’re dedicated to serving people with disabilities in a nurturing learning environment. At ArtWorks, our staff work with each individual to help them build knowledge and skills to support their ongoing work in studio art. Each individual is supported in their learning by rotating gallery exhibitions, and classroom instruction tailored to one's unique interests.
ArtWorks Day Option
ArtWorks Gallery & Studio opened its doors at an expanded 236 Penn Ave location in downtown Scranton in September 2019. Prior to relocation, ArtWorks operated at 503 Lackawanna Avenue from 2010. ArtWorks includes a modern exhibition space and fully equipped fine arts studios for painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, and screen printing. Join us every First Friday of the month to enjoy our opening receptions of new exhibitions.
“Day Option” at ArtWorks Gallery and Studio is an option among traditional day services, such as the opportunity for paid employment. At ArtWorks, day option participants are able to study fine art including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and many various mediums. Beacon Specialized Living additionally has vocational day program choices which our consumers are able to add a skill-based day option component in the arts to their week. Our participants choose how frequently they wish to attend based on interest and offered classes. Many of our participants attend multiple times a week. They receive professional instruction based on traditional fine art practices. We offer a variety of techniques and mediums. Each participant encouraged to exercise autonomy in selecting favorite mediums, subject matter, and style…in effect, ultimately a form of “independent study.” Participants work side by side with our instructors in preparation and training for community-based exhibitions. Once a participant has concluded a piece of artwork, our instructors guide each individual through the process of professional practices such as determining pricing, writing artist statements, and professionally exhibiting their work. Individuals showcase not only at our gallery, but throughout the Northeastern PA area.
ArtWorks is one of the major venues in the Scranton area during “Frist Friday.” An increasingly popular concept across the county is the “Community Art Walk.” In Scranton, the first Friday of every month, galleries and other businesses such as bars and restaurants, gift and floral shops invite artists to mount displays of their paintings, photos, or other artwork. They then open their businesses on Friday evening (6-9pm is the standard in Scranton), and invite the public to come enjoy the exhibition. This event immerses our individuals into the larger arts community. Our instructors are as enthusiastic about the arts as are our incoming participants. Accommodating each and every individual in order to follow our mission. ArtWorks’ goal for the day option program is to provide choices, confidence, and skill building.
Over the past few years, ArtWorks Gallery & Studio has developed expansion programs to provide services to individuals in Susquehanna County and Wyoming County. Artists from Montrose and Tunkhannock programs have exhibited their work at venues such as EMCA Gallery in Tunkhannock, Dietrich Theatre in Tunkhannock, ArtWorks Gallery & Studio in Scranton, and at the Susquehanna County Courthouse.
